How to Highlight: Tips and Tricks for Applying Highlighter

how to apply highlighter

For newbie highlighter users and even makeup lovers who use it as part of their contour, there’s a few tips and tricks for how to use this product besides accentuating your cheekbones (although we will touch on that, literally).
Highlighters can be used to take our skin to a whole new level—from creative eyeshadow glam to more defined bone structure, giving you the perfect glow up.

How to apply highlighter to your cheekbones

Cheekbone application

The most common use of a highlighter is to accentuate your cheekbones… and for good reason. It does a great job of giving you a subtle glow, and making those cheeks pop in place! If you’re one to apply bronzer, blush, and highlighter, it’s important to know where each product goes. If you’re new to highlighting your cheek area, follow along!

Here’s what you’ll do:
  • Using your index finger or a highlighting brush, apply your highlighter in a diagonal line from your temple area toward your under eye area, right before the ball of your cheek.
  • A little added tip: if you’re using bronzer, it will be applied right underneath the area you highlight. If you’re using a blush, apply it to the balls of your cheeks!

How to apply highlighter to your nose and lips

Nose and cupid’s bow

Highlighting the nose and lips is a great trick to accentuate your lips and make them look fuller, while making your nose a little sleeker and more defined. When contouring your face, it’s important to know exactly where the highlight goes versus bronzer to give it the wow factor you’re looking for.

Here’s what you’ll do:

  • Using a highlighting brush, apply the highlighter from the bridge to the ball of your nose.
  • Using your finger or the same highlighter brush, dab a tiny amount to your cupid’s bow, blending in slightly for a subtle yet stand-out glow effect. A little goes a long way!
  • Using your finger or the same highlighter brush, dab a small amount right underneath your bottom lip (make sure it’s center!).
  • A little added tip: if you’re applying highlighter to your nose as part of a contour, you’ll apply bronzer to the left and right sides of your nose, following along the line of where your contour was so you don’t overlap!

How to apply highlighter to your eyes

Eyelid, inner eye, and brow bone

Never thought to use a highlighter as an eyeshadow? Now’s your chance to get creative and fall in love! Highlighters work great as eye makeup because they give your lids an extra glimmer that makes your eyes pop and heads turn! You can even add a little bit to your lower lash line for an extra wow factor (you can thank us later).

Here’s what you’ll do:
  • Using an eyeshadow brush, apply the highlighter color of your choice to your eyelid until fully blended.
  • With the same brush, dab your highlighter into the tear duct area of your eyes—this will make them stand out even more!
  • Following the arch of your brow, lightly sweep some highlighter into the peak of your brow bone, to give it a more defined look.
  • A little added tip: For best results, we recommend using the Dual-Ended Eyeshadow Brush!
