Mastering Matte Makeup in 2025: A Step-by-Step Guide to Achieving Flawless Matte Skin
Hey everyone, it’s Keira here! Welcome back to the Subtl YouTube channel. Today, I’m switching things up with a new makeup look that’s a little outside of my usual vibe. We’re diving into the world of matte makeup! It’s said that matte makeup is making a big comeback in 2025, and I’m here to see how it stands up to the dewy, glowy looks I typically lean toward. If you’re someone who loves a more matte finish—whether you’re dealing with oily skin, hot weather, or a long event day—you’re in for a treat!
Why Matte Makeup?
Lately, I’ve noticed that by the end of the day, my blush and cream bronzer sometimes fade away, especially with my usual dewy looks. So, I’m excited to try out this matte makeup routine and see how well it holds up. Whether you’re prepping for a big event, a busy workday, or just prefer a more long-lasting finish, matte makeup is a great option to keep your face fresh all day.
Foundation and Concealer
To kick things off, I’m starting with foundation. I’m using the NARS Light Reflecting Foundation, which, though dewy, is approved by my aesthetician and won’t clog pores. Normally, I prefer to use Subtl’s concealer on its own because I don’t want to risk breaking out, but today, I’m going full glam with foundation.
For application, I’m using a beauty blender. I leave my nose uncovered to let my freckles peek through, but I’m covering everything else to create a smooth base. After applying foundation, I’ll touch up with concealer for those acne scars that need a little more attention. I like to press the concealer in gently with my finger to ensure it blends well.
Setting with Shine Control Powder
Next, it’s time to lock in the look. Since I’m going for a matte finish, I’m applying Subtl’s Shine Control Powder. This helps to smooth everything out and prevent any unwanted shine throughout the day. I’m using a triangle powder puff to press the powder into the skin, ensuring everything stays set in place.
Powder Bronzer and Blush
Now, let’s move on to the bronzer and blush. Since my Subtl bronzer was in my husband’s car, I’m using Leche today. Leche is a lighter shade than my usual Latte bronzer, but it still works perfectly with my skin tone. I like to really press the bronzer into my skin instead of dragging it across, especially since we’re going for a more matte finish. Don’t forget to add a little to the neck to match the face! For a quick nose contour, I pinch my bronzer brush and gently apply the product.
For blush, I’m going with Subtl’s Blossom Bound and Apricot Avenue powder blushes. These blushes are incredibly pigmented, so I start light and build up. It’s all about getting that perfect, sun-kissed look. I love how powder blush lets you be more creative—you can apply it where you want, and it’s easy to adjust. I also apply some to my nose for that flushed, natural glow.
Highlighter—Yes, You Can Still Highlight!
Even though I’m working with a matte look, I still want a touch of highlighter. I’ve decided to go with Subtl’s Golden Gimlet for a subtle glow. It’s a great way to add dimension to a matte base without losing the fresh, natural feel.
Perfecting the Matte Lip
Now let’s talk lips. For a matte look, I’m going for the classic matte lip—think Kylie Jenner style—where you line the lips darker and fade into a lighter shade. I’m using a combination of Runway to Rose and Auburn Adventure, creating a smooth gradient for a more polished finish. I love how the concealer trick works to really sharpen the lip line.
Matte Eyeshadow
When it comes to the eyes, I’m using Subtl’s Cruise Eyeshadow Duo. Since we’re keeping everything matte, I’m starting with the lighter purple shade and building it in the outer corners of my eyes. I follow a TikTok tip where I apply the eyeshadow where I want the color to be most intense and then blend outward. It really helps achieve that flawless look without harsh lines.
To finish the eyes, I go in with the darker shade in the duo, concentrating it on the outer corners. I also add a little light shade to the inner corner of the eyes to brighten things up. For eyeliner, I’m using Brow BFF in a medium brown shade to add definition without making it too bold.
Mascara and Final Touches
I always finish up with some mascara, and my look is almost complete. For the brows, I’m using Subtl’s Brow BFF to fill in any gaps and set them in place. I love how natural it looks. Finally, I’m going back to Apricot Avenue blush and applying it one last time for that perfect touch of color.
The Final Look
And there you have it! I’m so happy with how this look turned out. It’s matte but still has a subtle glow to it—definitely not as flat as the matte looks from 2016. The lips are sharp, the eyes are defined, and everything just feels balanced. I didn’t think I would love a matte look this much since I’ve been all about dewy skin for so long, but I’m really into it.
If you haven’t tried Subtl’s powder blushes yet, Apricot Avenue is my absolute favorite, and I highly recommend it if you’re looking to start your collection.
