CBD Beauty: Does It Live Up To The Hype?

woman surrounded by cannabis leaves

If you've been paying attention to health and wellness trends you've probably heard of Cannabidiol, more commonly referred to as CBD.

For years rumors and claims have circled around CBD as a great natural remedy for pain relief, anxiety, and other ailments. Most recently, CBD has made its way into the beauty scene, touted as a new miracle ingredient, but is it worth the hype?

We did some digging and asked our Instagram followers what their experience has been.

Here’s what we heard

CBD beauty products

“I use smith and cult’s CBD lip balm daily. I love the smell and it’s extremely hydrating but I’m not sure it does anything beyond that.” - Kcol4615

It seems people aren’t sure if the CBD is the reason they love a product or if the product would be just as lovely without it.

“I tried mascara! I expected my lashes to feel different; more nourished or something, but they felt the same.” - @beyond.the.veil.makeup

“I use a CBD sleep mask that I love because I have issues falling asleep, mainly due to anxiety, and it has natural relaxants in it that definitely work. Plus it hydrates my skin while I sleep. It contains CBD and lavender (which is a known ingredient for relaxation.)” - Jenna

A lot of salons and spas are starting to integrate CBD into their treatments

“My first experience with any product was the nail salon when they used CBD lotion during my pedicure. They told me clients with arthritis found the product amazing for pain relief. That was definitely the best experience with a CBD product I’ve had because it really did relieve sore muscles.” - @kcol4615

But the experience is mixed....

“My husband tried a CBD facial and hated it. He found it too oily but he said that after doing more reading about it he learned that the amount of CBD you need to ACTUALLY make a difference is like 600mg and most things only have like 35mg so it doesn’t make sense to him.” - @Olgapogoda

“I tried a hand cream but it felt the same, however, I’m washing my hands a lot more these days so perhaps I didn’t give that one a fair chance!” - @beyond.the.veil.makeup

The Verdict?

39% of adults would try CBD beauty

While most of our followers are uncertain of the efficacy of CBD beauty, those who hadn't tried it were eager to learn more.

In fact, a 2018 study showed that 38% of American adults said they would be interested in trying CBD-infused beauty products. This is reflective of increasing consumer interest in the CBD space, but as one of our respondents pointed out, your fav CBD beauty product may not contain enough cannabidiol to really make a difference. While the jury is still out on CBD, we are excited to see how it evolves in beauty over the next 5 years.
